Kenyans

Kenyans are the citizens of Kenya, a country in East Africa. The term also refers to people of Kenyan descent living abroad. Kenya is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious society with a rich tapestry of languages and cultures.

The population comprises numerous ethnic communities broadly grouped as Bantu, Nilotic, and Cushitic. Major groups include the Kikuyu, Luhya, Kalenjin, Luo, Kamba, Maasai, Kisii, Turkana, and many others. Official languages are English and Swahili; local languages are widely spoken and used in education and daily life.

Religion is diverse, with Christianity and Islam the largest faiths, alongside traditional beliefs. Kenya has a young population and significant urban growth, with major cities such as Nairobi and Mombasa serving as economic and cultural hubs.

Historically, the region had powerful pre-colonial states before becoming a British colony in the late 19th century. Kenya gained independence in 1963 and established a republic. A 2010 constitution created devolution to 47 counties and reinforced civilian rule.

The economy is diverse, with agriculture (notably tea and coffee), horticulture, manufacturing, services, and tourism playing major roles. Nairobi, the capital, is a regional business center, and Mombasa is an important port.

Kenyan culture encompasses music, dance, and sports, with long-distance running earning international recognition. The country also has a growing literature and film scene and a dynamic, youthful society.
