Keményítéseljárások, or hardening processes, refer to various methods used to increase the hardness and wear resistance of materials, primarily metals. These processes alter the microstructure or surface properties of the material to achieve the desired hardness. Common keményítéseljárások include heat treatment techniques such as quenching and tempering, where a metal is heated to a specific temperature and then rapidly cooled (quenched) to lock in a hard microstructure, followed by a lower-temperature heating (tempering) to reduce brittleness.

Another significant category is surface hardening, which modifies only the outer layer of the material while the core retains its toughness. Case hardening, a form of surface hardening, involves introducing carbon or nitrogen into the surface of a steel to create a hard, wear-resistant case. This can be achieved through processes like carburizing, nitriding, or carbonitriding, often in conjunction with subsequent quenching. Induction hardening and flame hardening are also common surface hardening methods that use localized heating and rapid cooling to create a hardened layer.
