Keloidien

Keloidien is a Finnish word referring to keloids, which are raised scars that grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound. They are a type of hypertrophic scar, meaning they are thickened and elevated. Keloids can occur after skin injury, such as cuts, burns, acne, piercings, or surgery.

The exact cause of keloid formation is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve an overproduction of collagen during the healing process. Certain individuals are more prone to developing keloids, with a higher incidence in people with darker skin tones, younger individuals between the ages of 10 and 30, and those with a family history of keloids.

Keloids typically appear as smooth, firm, rubbery growths that can vary in color from pink to red or purplish. They can be itchy, painful, or tender. While they can occur anywhere on the body, they are most common on the chest, shoulders, upper back, earlobes, and face. Keloids can continue to grow over time and may not stop at the edges of the original injury.

Treatment options for keloids aim to flatten and soften the scar, reduce itching and pain, or remove the keloid. These may include corticosteroid injections, cryotherapy (freezing), silicone sheeting, laser therapy, pressure therapy, or surgical removal. However, keloids can recur after treatment, especially if surgically excised. Prevention strategies focus on meticulous wound care and avoiding unnecessary skin trauma.
