Kelasti

Kelasti is a coastal town in the eastern province of Aradia, built around a natural harbor along the Vinar Sea. The historic center sits on a low promontory with newer neighborhoods inland. As of the latest census, Kelasti has a population of approximately 8,400. The town lies within a temperate maritime climate, influenced by sea breezes.

History describes Kelasti’s origins as a fishing settlement founded in the 12th century. It grew as trade routes along the Vinar developed, and in the 15th century defensive walls were erected. The arrival of steam-powered shipping in the 19th century spurred the growth of shipyards and light industry, while fishing remained a mainstay.

Governance and economy: Kelasti is governed by a municipal council led by a mayor elected for four-year terms. The local economy combines fishing, aquaculture, tourism, and small-scale manufacturing. Local products include seaweed-based cosmetics and handwoven textiles that reflect regional craft traditions.

Geography and culture: The town is framed by low hills to the north and a sandy shoreline to the south, with the Vinar River estuary forming a natural boundary on one side. Kelasti hosts the annual Kelasti Festival in August, a multi-day event with parades, boat races, music, and craft markets.

Landmarks and transport: Notable landmarks include Kelasti Fort, the Old Pier, and the Market Gate. The town is linked by a regional road network to the capital and other cities; a nearby railway line provides longer-distance connections, and a seasonal ferry connects Kelasti to neighboring islands.
