Kehahoiakut

Kehahoiakut is a ceremonial practice of the fictional Aelaran people, described in ethnographic accounts within the Luminal Archive universe. The term derives from the Aelaran language, where kehā means bind and hoiakut denotes memory or history, and is commonly rendered as “binding memory.” The rite is traditionally performed annually during the harvest equinox in shared public spaces along the Shard Isles.

During kehahoiakut, participants from multiple generations weave a long cord from plant-based fibers while a lead vocalist or chorus recites a cyclical chant that retells the community’s past and outlines guiding principles. Each knot, color, and sequence encodes a memory, decision, or value, and the finished cord is kept in a communal archive or displayed in the central square.

The practice serves to reaffirm social bonds, preserve oral history, and coordinate collective action for the coming year. Apprentices train in weaving patterns, chant rhythms, and interpretation of the cord’s symbolism. The rite is typically a public event, often accompanied by modest music and shared meals, and it may mark transitions such as apprentices becoming full members of the weaving guild or youth entering adulthood within the community.
