Keeemiliste

Keeemiliste refers to a traditional Estonian folk custom involving the blessing of a new home or farmstead. The term is derived from the Estonian words *kee* (meaning "to bless") and *milist* (meaning "to milk"), reflecting the agricultural roots of the practice. Keeemiliste is typically performed by a *keeemilane* (a person skilled in folk rituals) or a respected elder in the community, often during significant life events such as weddings, births, or the completion of a new dwelling.

The ritual usually takes place at dawn, symbolizing purity and the beginning of a new cycle. The *keeemilane* enters the home or barn, carrying sacred objects like a sprig of rowan, a loaf of bread, salt, and sometimes a small animal, often a chicken or a piglet, representing prosperity. The person blesses the space by sprinkling water, reciting prayers, and making protective signs with their hands. The bread and salt are placed in the corners of the room to ward off evil spirits and ensure fertility and abundance.

Keeemiliste is deeply tied to Estonian shamanistic traditions, where nature and household spirits (*kodu hinged*) are believed to influence daily life. The ritual aims to establish a harmonious relationship between the inhabitants and the spiritual world, ensuring health, wealth, and protection. While modern Estonians may not adhere strictly to these customs, elements of keeemiliste persist in cultural celebrations, reflecting the enduring connection between folklore and national identity.
