Kaugeksnägevus

Kaugeksnägevus, also known as hyperopia, is a common vision condition where distant objects can be seen clearly, but close objects appear blurred. It occurs when the eye does not refract light properly, causing light rays to focus behind the retina instead of directly on it. This can be due to the eyeball being too short or the cornea or lens not having enough curvature.

Symptoms of kaugeksnägevus can vary depending on the severity. In mild cases, individuals might not experience any noticeable symptoms, especially when young, as the eye's natural ability to adjust (accommodation) can compensate. However, as accommodation decreases with age or in more significant hyperopia, symptoms become more apparent. These can include eyestrain, headaches, especially after reading or close work, and a feeling of fatigue in the eyes. In some cases, especially in children, uncorrected kaugeksnägevus can lead to strabismus (crossed eyes) or amblyopia (lazy eye).

Diagnosis of kaugeksnägevus is typically made through a comprehensive eye examination by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. This examination includes tests to measure visual acuity and to determine the refractive error of the eye.

Treatment for kaugeksnägevus aims to correct the refractive error so that light focuses properly on the retina. The most common corrective methods include prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses. For some individuals, refractive surgery, such as LASIK, may also be an option to permanently reshape the cornea and correct the vision. The choice of treatment depends on the degree of hyperopia, the individual's age, lifestyle, and personal preferences.
