Kategóriaként

Kategóriaként is a Hungarian grammatical form formed from the noun kategória with the suffix -ként. It means “as a category” or “in the capacity of a category,” and it is used to indicate that something is being considered, described, or treated in the role of a particular category rather than as a single item.

The form expresses function or perspective and is common in formal or analytical writing, classification, and explanations where grouping or framing is important. It can refer to a viewpoint, a methodological step, or a way of organizing information. In practice, it is paired with a noun or noun phrase to specify the role being asserted, for example as “kategóriaként” in singular or “kategóriákként” when multiple categories are involved.

Usage notes: -ként attaches to the base in a way that is typical of other -ként forms such as példaként or szakértőként. It is a relatively neutral, descriptive tool in prose and can appear in academic papers, reports, and explanatory texts. Examples include: “A feladatot kategóriaként kell értelmezni a kutatási tervben,” meaning the task should be interpreted as a category, and “a fogalmat különböző kategóriaként vizsgálják,” meaning the concept is examined as different categories.
