Kategoriefehler
Kategoriefehler, also known as category mistake, is a philosophical concept that describes an error in reasoning where a property attributed to an object is not a property that the object could logically possess. It arises from a misunderstanding or misapplication of the categories to which things belong. For example, saying "the average man is bald" is a category mistake because "average man" refers to a statistical concept, not an individual person who can possess the property of baldness. Similarly, stating "colorless green ideas sleep furiously" is a famous example of a category mistake in linguistics, highlighting how abstract concepts cannot possess physical attributes like color or the ability to sleep.
The concept was prominently discussed by philosopher Gilbert Ryle in his book "The Concept of Mind" (1949).
