KatayamaFieber, also known as Katayama disease or endemic schistosomiasis, is a tropical parasitic disease caused by the blood fluke Schistosoma japonicum. This species of Schistosoma is primarily found in the Philippines and China, though historically it has been present in other parts of Asia. The infection is acquired when larval forms of the parasite, released from infected freshwater snails, penetrate the skin of humans during contact with contaminated water.
Once in the human body, the larvae develop into adult worms that reside in the blood vessels
