Kasvuvalmisteet

Kasvuvalmisteet, known in English as growth promoters, are substances used in animal husbandry to accelerate growth rate and improve feed conversion efficiency in livestock. Their primary goal is to increase the economic viability of animal production by enabling animals to reach market weight faster and with less feed. These products can include a variety of compounds, such as antibiotics, hormones, probiotics, enzymes, and other additives.

Antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) were historically the most common type. They function by altering the gut microbiota, reducing the population of bacteria that compete with the animal for nutrients or produce toxins. However, concerns over antibiotic resistance have led to significant restrictions and bans on their use in many regions, including the European Union.

Hormonal growth promoters, such as synthetic estrogens, androgens, and gestagens, are also used in some parts of the world to promote muscle development and reduce fat deposition. Their use is also controversial and heavily regulated or prohibited in many countries due to potential human health risks and ethical considerations.

Non-antibiotic alternatives are gaining prominence. Probiotics introduce beneficial microorganisms to the gut, aiming to improve digestion and immune function. Enzymes are added to animal feed to break down complex carbohydrates, proteins, and other compounds, making them more digestible and absorbable. Other additives may include organic acids, prebiotics, and plant extracts, all aimed at enhancing animal health and performance without the risks associated with AGPs and hormones. The development and regulation of kasvuvalmisteet continue to evolve, driven by scientific advancements, consumer demand for safe food, and animal welfare considerations.
