Kasvufaaside refers to the different stages of growth that organisms, particularly plants and bacteria, undergo. Understanding these phases is crucial in various fields, including agriculture, microbiology, and biotechnology. The most commonly recognized phases for plants are the germination, vegetative, reproductive, and senescence stages. Germination is the initial sprouting of a seed, driven by water and favorable environmental conditions. The vegetative stage is characterized by active growth of leaves, stems, and roots, with the plant accumulating biomass. The reproductive stage involves the development of flowers, fruits, or seeds, leading to the propagation of the species. Finally, senescence is the aging process where the plant gradually deteriorates, often culminating in death.

In microbiology, bacteria typically exhibit four growth phases when cultured in a laboratory setting: lag phase, exponential (log) phase, stationary phase, and death (or decline) phase. The lag phase is a period of adjustment where bacteria adapt to their new environment. During the exponential phase, bacteria divide at their maximum rate, leading to a rapid increase in population. The stationary phase occurs when the rate of cell division equals the rate of cell death, often due to nutrient depletion or waste accumulation. The death phase is when the death rate exceeds the division rate, leading to a decrease in viable cells. These phases are monitored using methods like optical density measurements or viable cell counts.
