Kasusrapporter

Kasusrapporter, or case reports, are detailed descriptive writings about the medical care of a single patient or a small number of patients. They document the presenting symptoms, diagnostic workup, therapeutic interventions, and outcomes, and they often highlight rare or novel occurrences that may prompt further study. Case reports may also describe unusual presentations of common diseases, unexpected adverse effects, or new responses to treatment.

A typical kasusrapport includes de-identified patient information, relevant medical history, a chronological timeline of events, diagnostic reasoning and tests performed, the chosen treatment, and the patient's short- and long-term outcomes. The report usually concludes with a discussion of why the case is noteworthy, how it relates to existing knowledge, potential mechanisms, and possible implications for clinical practice. When appropriate, the report also addresses ethical considerations, consent, and anonymization.

Kasusrapporter serve several purposes: they document rare conditions, generate hypotheses for further research, and educate clinicians about atypical manifestations or management issues. They are not designed to establish causality or generalize findings but can signal areas for systematic study. Editors often apply reporting guidelines, such as CARE guidelines, to improve completeness and transparency. Because of variability in quality and the limited sample size, many journals limit or curate the publication of kasusrapporter.
