Kastratuur

Kastratuur refers to the surgical removal of the gonads, the primary reproductive organs in animals. In males, this typically involves the castration of the testicles, while in females, it is the spaying or ovariectomy of the ovaries. This procedure is commonly performed on domestic animals, including cats, dogs, horses, and cattle, for various reasons.

One primary motivation for kastratuur is population control, preventing unwanted breeding and contributing to a reduction in the number of stray animals. It also offers significant health benefits for the animal. In males, it can eliminate the risk of testicular cancer and reduce the likelihood of prostate problems. In females, spaying prevents uterine infections, such as pyometra, and significantly lowers the risk of mammary tumors.

Behavioral modifications are another key reason for performing kastratuur. Castrated males often exhibit reduced aggression, a decreased tendency to roam, and less marking of territory. Spayed females do not go into heat, eliminating the associated behaviors like vocalization and restlessness. The timing of the procedure can vary depending on the species and the intended outcome, with veterinarians recommending the optimal age for each individual animal. While generally considered safe, like any surgical procedure, kastratuur carries inherent risks, including anesthesia complications and infection.
