Kariekselle

Kariekselle is a fictional cellular unit used in speculative biology and science fiction to explore ideas about cellular life and biomineralization. It is not a term recognized in real-world biology, and there is no empirical evidence for organisms by this name outside of imagined contexts. In many treatments, kariekselle serves as a thought experiment to examine how cells might interact with minerals and form protective shells.

In outline, a kariekselle is described as a single-celled organism or cell type with a flexible outer membrane and a specialized biomineralization vesicle. This vesicle deposits minerals, creating a shell or exoskeleton often referred to as karieksellites. Variant depictions differ on whether the organism is photosynthetic, chemoorganotrophic, or capable of both, and whether it contains chloroplast-like structures or alternative energy-harvesting organelles.

Ecology and behavior are typically framed around sediment-water interface habitats in fictional aquatic systems. Karieksellenes are sometimes portrayed as forming loose colonies or biofilms, attaching to mineral surfaces, and contributing to sediment formation through mineral deposition. They may reproduce by binary fission, with short generation times in favorable conditions, and, in some stories, exchange genetic material through horizontal transfer.
