Karbotsüsteiin

Karbotsüsteiin is a mucolytic agent used in medicine. It works by altering the structure of mucus, making it less viscous and easier to clear from the airways. This can be beneficial for individuals suffering from respiratory conditions characterized by excessive or thick mucus production, such as bronchitis, emphysema, and other chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD).

The mechanism of action of carbocisteine involves the disruption of disulfide bonds within the mucin glycoproteins. By breaking these bonds, carbocisteine reduces the elasticity and viscosity of mucus. This effect helps to thin the mucus, facilitating its expectoration through coughing. It is thought to stimulate the goblet cells in the respiratory epithelium to produce a less viscous, more watery mucus, further aiding in clearance.

Carbocisteine is typically administered orally in the form of capsules, tablets, or syrup. Its absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is generally good. The drug is metabolized in the liver and excreted primarily through the kidneys. Common side effects are usually mild and may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. Allergic reactions are rare but possible.

While carbocisteine can help manage symptoms associated with excessive mucus, it does not cure the underlying respiratory disease.
