Karboksyliryhmän

Karboksyliryhmä is the Finnish term for the carboxyl group. It is a functional group in organic chemistry consisting of a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to a hydroxyl group (-OH). The general formula for a carboxyl group is -COOH. This group is acidic due to the resonance stabilization of the carboxylate anion formed when a proton is released.

Carboxylic acids, which contain one or more carboxyl groups, are a major class of organic compounds. They are found in many naturally occurring substances, such as fatty acids, amino acids, and vitamins. Carboxylic acids play crucial roles in biological systems and are widely used in industry as solvents, reagents, and precursors for polymers and pharmaceuticals.

The characterization of the carboxyl group is often achieved through spectroscopic methods, such as infrared spectroscopy, where a strong absorption band associated with the C=O stretch typically appears around 1700-1730 cm⁻¹.
