Karakteriseerimine, a term of Latin origin meaning "to describe," refers to the process of portraying a character's traits, motivations, and background. In literature and drama, characterization is a fundamental element that allows the audience to understand and connect with the individuals within a narrative. It can be achieved through various methods, including direct description, where the author explicitly states a character's qualities, or indirect methods, such as revealing character through their actions, dialogue, thoughts, or the reactions of others.

The effectiveness of characterization lies in its ability to create believable and memorable figures. Authors utilize a range of techniques to build a comprehensive picture of their characters. This includes physical descriptions that might hint at personality, the language and tone of their speech, their personal histories and formative experiences, and the choices they make when faced with conflict or moral dilemmas. The evolution of a character over the course of a story, known as dynamic characterization, is also a crucial aspect, demonstrating growth, change, or decline. Static characters, conversely, remain largely unchanged throughout the narrative.
