Kapcsolókonverterek, also known as switching converters or switched-mode power supplies (SMPS), are electronic power converters that use switching elements, such as transistors or diodes, to efficiently convert electrical power. Unlike linear regulators, which dissipate excess energy as heat, switching converters rapidly switch a component on and off. This high-frequency switching allows for voltage and current conversion with significantly less energy loss, leading to higher efficiency.

The basic principle involves storing energy in an inductor or capacitor during one part of the switching cycle and then releasing it during another part. This process effectively steps voltage up (boost converter), steps voltage down (buck converter), or inverts voltage polarity (inverting converter). More complex topologies, like buck-boost converters, can achieve both step-up and step-down functionality.

Key advantages of switching converters include their high efficiency, which translates to reduced heat generation and smaller, lighter power supplies. They are widely used in a vast array of electronic devices, from personal computers and mobile phone chargers to industrial equipment and power grids, due to their ability to provide stable and regulated power from a variable input source. The switching frequency is a critical parameter, typically ranging from tens of kilohertz to several megahertz, influencing the size of passive components and the overall converter performance.
