Kapazitätsmargen, often translated as capacity margin or reserve capacity, refers to the excess production capacity available in an electricity system above the expected peak demand. This surplus capacity is crucial for ensuring the reliability and stability of the power grid. When demand for electricity rises unexpectedly, such as during heatwaves or cold snaps, or when a major power plant unexpectedly goes offline, the capacity margin acts as a buffer.

Maintaining an adequate capacity margin helps prevent blackouts or brownouts, which occur when the electricity supply cannot meet demand. Grid operators carefully monitor and forecast demand and supply to ensure sufficient capacity is available. This can involve having reserve power plants that can be quickly brought online, or contractual agreements with generators to provide power when needed.

The optimal level of capacity margin is a subject of ongoing debate among energy policy makers and industry experts. Too low a margin increases the risk of supply shortages and price volatility. Conversely, a very high capacity margin can lead to inefficient investment in generation capacity that is rarely used, potentially increasing costs for consumers.
