Kanzan

Kanzan, sometimes spelled Kwanzan, is a cultivar of the Japanese flowering cherry (Prunus serrulata). Originating in Japan, it is widely grown worldwide as an ornamental tree for its prominent spring display.

The tree is deciduous with a broad, rounded to pyramidal habit, typically reaching 6–9 meters in height and a similar spread, though size varies with climate and pruning. New growth often has a bronzy tint and matures to medium to dark green leaves that turn yellow to red in autumn. The hallmark of Kanzan is its flowers: large clusters of double pink blossoms with many petals, giving a full, pom‑pom appearance. Bloom usually occurs in late spring, depending on climate, and the blossoms cover the tree for several weeks in favorable conditions.

Culture and care guidelines advise planting Kanzan in full sun with fertile, well‑drained soil. It tolerates a range of soil types but dislikes waterlogged conditions. Pruning is usually done after flowering to maintain shape and remove any crossing or damaged wood. Like other flowering cherries, it can be susceptible to common cherry pests and diseases, such as aphids, scale, and leaf spots, so regular monitoring and good cultural practices are recommended.

Kanzan is popular in parks, streetscapes, and residential gardens for its striking spring spectacle. It is frequently used as a specimen tree or planted in groups to create a colorful display, and it remains one of the best‑known varieties in temperate ornamental horticulture.
