Kandidong

Kandidong is a small coastal settlement located approximately 12 kilometres southeast of the provincial capital in the eastern part of Sumatra. The village lies within the administrative district of Kepuh in the Tanah Merah Regency, falling under the jurisdiction of Aceh Besar Province. With an estimated population of 3,800 residents as of the 2020 census, Kandidong is characterised by a mix of low‐lying paddy fields, mangrove forests, and a modest fishing harbour.

Historically, Kandidong has served as a local trading post where fish, cashew nuts, and freshwater shrimp are exchanged with neighbouring inland communities. Oral histories suggest that the village was founded in the mid‑19th century by a group of traders from the Banda Islands, who brought with them Dutch colonial administrative practices. Over time, these practices were blended with local customs, leading to a unique hybrid identity that is reflected in the village’s traditional festivals, particularly the annual “Rabu Pahawa” celebration, which marks the beginning of the fishing season.

Economically, Kandidong relies heavily on artisanal fishing and small‑scale agriculture. The community has recently invested in a community‑run aquaculture cooperatives, focusing on sustainable shrimp farming. In addition, the village has seen a modest influx of ecotourism, with visitors attracted to its untouched mangrove ecosystems and opportunities for birdwatching. Local authorities have initiated mangrove conservation programmes to protect vital coastal habitats and to support the livelihoods of fishers.

Culturally, Kandidong retains a number of post‑colonial folktales that describe the relationship between the sea and its people. These narratives, often performed during communal gatherings, emphasise themes of stewardship, cooperation, and respect for the natural environment. The preservation of these stories is considered an integral part of the community’s cultural identity, and they are taught in local schools to reinforce traditional values among younger generations.
