Kanbansignaalointia, often referred to as Kanban signaling, is a key component of the Kanban method used in lean manufacturing and project management. It serves as a visual cue to trigger the production or movement of materials or tasks. The primary purpose of a Kanban signal is to control the flow of work and prevent overproduction or bottlenecks. When a Kanban signal appears, it indicates that a downstream process has consumed or used an item, thereby creating a demand for a replacement.

There are generally two main types of Kanban signals: production Kanban and withdrawal Kanban. A production Kanban signals that it is time to produce a certain quantity of a specific item. A withdrawal Kanban signals that it is time to move a specified quantity of an item from a preceding stage to the current stage. These signals can take various forms, including physical cards, empty bins, electronic notifications, or even designated areas on a floor.

The core principle behind Kanban signaling is "pull," meaning that work is pulled through the system only when there is demand from the next stage, rather than being "pushed" into the system based on forecasts. This pull system helps to reduce inventory levels, improve lead times, and enhance overall efficiency by ensuring that resources are only utilized when needed. The effectiveness of Kanban signaling relies on clear visual communication and strict adherence to the signals to maintain a smooth and controlled workflow.
