Kammiolyönnit, which translates to "chamber blows" or "piston strikes" in English, refers to a specific type of mechanical fault or operational issue that can occur in reciprocating engines, particularly those with poppet valves. This phenomenon arises when the piston, during its upward stroke, makes contact with the open valves in the cylinder head.

The primary cause of kammiolyönnit is incorrect valve timing. This can result from issues with the camshaft, timing belt, timing chain, or associated components, leading to the valves opening or closing at the wrong point in the piston's cycle. Excessive wear or damage to valve train components can also contribute to the problem. In some cases, incorrect valve or piston installation, or modifications to the engine that alter the compression ratio or piston height, can also lead to this interference.

The consequences of kammiolyönnit can be severe. The impact between the piston and the valve can cause significant damage to both components. This might include bent or broken valves, damaged piston crowns, or even more catastrophic engine failure if the collision is forceful enough to damage the cylinder head or block.
