Kameleontfärger

Kameleontfärger, also known as chameleon colors or color-shifting paints, are a type of special effect coating that changes color depending on the angle of observation and illumination. This phenomenon is achieved through the use of multilayer optical interference pigments. These pigments are typically made of thin, transparent films of metal oxides like titanium dioxide and iron oxide, layered on a substrate such as mica or glass.

When light strikes these multilayer pigments, it reflects off each individual layer. The thickness of these layers is precisely controlled, causing certain wavelengths of light to interfere constructively (reinforce each other) and others to interfere destructively (cancel each other out). The specific wavelengths that are reinforced determine the color that is seen from a particular angle. As the viewing angle or the angle of the light source changes, different wavelengths are constructively interfered with, leading to the perception of a color shift.

Kameleontfärger are used in a variety of applications. They are popular in automotive finishes, providing a dynamic and eye-catching appearance to vehicles. They are also found in cosmetics, such as nail polish and eyeshadow, to create unique shimmering effects. In addition, these special effect pigments are used in security printing for banknotes and identification documents to deter counterfeiting, as the color-shifting properties are difficult to replicate.
