Kamakselsystemer, often translated as camshaft systems, are fundamental components in internal combustion engines. Their primary function is to control the opening and closing of the engine's intake and exhaust valves. This precise timing is critical for the engine's operation, enabling the efficient flow of the fuel-air mixture into the combustion chamber and the expulsion of exhaust gases.

The core of a kamakselsystem is the camshaft itself, a rotating shaft with lobes or cams. As the camshaft rotates, these lobes push against valve lifters or rocker arms, which in turn actuate the valves. The shape and position of the cams determine the duration and lift of the valve openings. The camshaft is typically driven by the engine's crankshaft through a timing belt, timing chain, or gears, ensuring its rotation is synchronized with the crankshaft's movement.

Modern engines often employ overhead camshafts (OHC), where the camshaft is located in the cylinder head, closer to the valves. This design reduces mechanical complexity and allows for more precise valve control compared to older overhead valve (OHV) systems where the camshaft was in the engine block. Some advanced systems also feature variable valve timing (VVT), which allows the engine control unit to adjust the camshaft's timing dynamically based on engine speed and load, optimizing performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions.
