Kalvorakenne

Kalvorakenne is a Finnish term used in biology and related fields to describe the structure formed by membranes, or membrane-bound systems. It refers to the arrangement and organization of lipid bilayers and associated proteins that enclose and separate cellular spaces or subcellular compartments. In a broader sense, the term can also describe artificial or synthetic membrane structures used in research and industry.

The canonical biological membrane is the phospholipid bilayer, often described by the fluid mosaic model. Lipid molecules form a hydrophobic core with hydrophilic heads facing water; proteins, cholesterol and other molecules modulate fluidity, permeability, and curvature. Membrane architecture is asymmetric and dynamic; domains and microdomains create functional platforms for signaling and transport. Membranes frequently form vesicles and interconnected networks that facilitate compartmentalization within the cell.

Functions include containment, selective transport via channels and pumps, signal transduction, and energy transduction in mitochondria and chloroplasts. They also participate in cell recognition, adhesion, and protection of vital contents. Examples of kalvorakenne include the plasma membrane, the nuclear envelope, and the internal membranes of mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, as well as the membranes surrounding vesicles and organelles. In anatomy, serous and mucous membranes are also membrane structures.

Formation and study: membrane structures arise from self-assembly of lipids and proteins, influenced by temperature, cholesterol content, and ionic conditions. They are investigated with techniques such as electron and fluorescence microscopy, spectroscopy, and computational modeling.

Etymology: kalvo means membrane and rakenne means structure in Finnish; the term emphasizes architecture and organization of lipid–protein assemblies.
