In the imagined biology, Kalkylera forms sessile colonies with a calcareous skeleton. Colonies are encrustations or branching structures that attach to rocky substrates in shallow, sunlit marine waters. Individual modules, or kalkyloids, measure a few millimeters to a centimeter; the skeleton is primarily calcium carbonate, which would appear white or pale when fossilized.

Life cycle and reproduction in the fictional account are described as predominantly asexual budding, with occasional sexual reproduction via free-swimming larvae.
