Kalkkistuminen, also known as calcification or the deposition of calcium salts, is a biological process characterized by the accumulation of calcium compounds in tissues or organs. This phenomenon can occur in various tissues throughout the body and may be associated with aging, tissue damage, or certain medical conditions.

There are two main types of kalkkistuminen: dystrophic and metastatic. Dystrophic calcification typically appears in damaged or necrotic tissues, such as areas affected by inflammation, trauma, or cell death. In these cases, calcium salts deposit despite normal blood calcium levels. Conversely, metastatic calcification occurs when there is an abnormal elevation of blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia), leading to calcium deposits in otherwise healthy tissues, often in the lungs, kidneys, or blood vessels.
