Kalduvused

Kalduvused is an Estonian term used to describe systematic predispositions that influence perception, judgment, and behavior. The word is commonly translated as “tendencies” or “biases,” and it is employed across disciplines to refer to stable or situational inclinations that shape how people process information and act.

In scholarly usage, kalduvused cover a broad range of phenomena. They can be cognitive, referring to mental shortcuts or distortions in thinking that affect memory, attention, and reasoning. They can also be attitudinal or social, describing predispositions toward particular beliefs, values, groups, or norms. Kalduvused may be innate, learned, or shaped by the environment, and they can vary in strength and durability.

Common examples include a tendency to interpret new information in a way that confirms existing beliefs, to rely on recent events when assessing risk, or to favor members of one’s in-group over others. Kalduvused can influence decision making in everyday life, as well as outcomes in education, media, politics, and economics. Because they are inherently systematic, researchers study kalduvused using experiments, surveys, and observational methods to identify patterns, sources, and potential mitigations.
