Kaasuyhtiöt, or gas companies, are firms that operate across the gas value chain. They may be involved in exploration and production of gas reserves where applicable, import and processing of natural gas, transportation and storage through pipelines and terminals, distribution to end users, and the sale of gas for residential, commercial, industrial, and energy-sector customers. In addition to natural gas, kaasuyhtiöt may handle other gaseous fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and biogas as part of renewable gas initiatives, as well as industrial and specialty gases used in manufacturing and healthcare.

The structure of kaasuyhtiöt differs by country. Markets often separate network operations from supply activities; a transmission system operator or pipeline owner controls critical infrastructure, while retail gas supply is competitive or regulated depending on jurisdiction. Tariffs and access terms for networks are typically overseen by energy regulators, with safety, metering, and environmental standards applied across the sector.

In Finland, notable kaasuyhtiöt include Gasum Oy, which imports and markets natural gas and biomethane, and Gasgrid Finland Oy, which operates the Finnish natural gas transmission network. The Finnish market has a relatively small natural gas consumption base and is complemented by biogas and methane from renewable sources.

Looking forward, kaasuyhtiöt face transitions toward decarbonization, greater use of renewable and synthetic gases, and digitalization of networks and services. They play a key role in energy security by ensuring reliable gas supply and integrating gas with broader power and heating systems.
