Külgahel

Külgahel is a term originating from Estonian folklore and mythology. It generally refers to a spectral or ghostly entity that is often associated with cold, wintery conditions and a sense of unease or dread. These beings are not typically depicted as malevolent in the traditional sense, but rather as manifestations of the harshness and isolation that can accompany winter.

Stories about külgahel often describe them appearing during blizzards or on particularly cold nights. Their presence is sometimes said to bring an unnatural chill, even in enclosed spaces, and a feeling of being watched. They are rarely given a distinct physical form, often described as shadowy figures, wisps of mist, or simply an intangible cold. The association with cold is so strong that the term itself is thought to be derived from "külm" (cold) and "ahel" (chain or link), suggesting a connection or link to the cold.
