Küünenahkasid refers to the small pieces of skin located at the base of a fingernail or toenail. This protective fold of skin is also known as the cuticle. It plays a crucial role in preventing bacteria and other pathogens from entering the nail bed. The cuticle is a thin layer of epidermal cells that is shed and pushed forward as the nail grows.

Maintaining healthy cuticles is generally recommended. Excessive removal or aggressive trimming of the cuticles can lead to infection, inflammation, and damage to the nail. While some people choose to push back or trim their cuticles as part of nail care routines, it is often advised to do so gently and with clean instruments. Moisturizing the cuticles can help keep them soft and prevent dryness or cracking.

In some cultures, the appearance of the cuticle is considered an important aspect of hand and nail aesthetics. However, from a purely biological standpoint, its primary function is defense and protection of the underlying nail matrix. Neglecting cuticle health can sometimes be an indicator of underlying health issues, though this is less common than simple dryness or improper care.
