Kõhulõhitus, also known as abdominal distension or bloating, is a common condition characterized by a feeling of fullness and tightness in the abdomen, often accompanied by a visible swelling or enlargement of the belly. It is a subjective sensation rather than a measurable increase in abdominal girth, although in some cases, a physical enlargement can occur.

The causes of kõhulõhitus are numerous and can range from simple dietary factors to more complex medical conditions. Common culprits include the accumulation of gas in the digestive tract, which can be caused by swallowing air, eating gas-producing foods like beans or certain vegetables, or changes in gut bacteria. Constipation, where stool accumulates in the intestines, is another frequent cause.

Beyond these, kõhulõhitus can be a symptom of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), where abdominal pain and altered bowel habits are present along with bloating. Other gastrointestinal disorders like celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) can also lead to this sensation.

In some instances, more serious conditions may be responsible. These can include fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites), which can be related to liver disease, heart failure, or certain cancers. Ovarian cysts or other gynecological issues in women can also cause abdominal distension.

Treatment for kõhulõhitus typically depends on the underlying cause. For mild cases related to diet or gas, lifestyle modifications such as avoiding trigger foods, eating slowly, and regular physical activity may be sufficient. For persistent or severe symptoms, medical evaluation is recommended to identify and address the root cause.
