Kézfertőtlenítés refers to the process of disinfecting the hands to remove or kill microorganisms. This practice is a cornerstone of infection control and is widely recognized for its importance in preventing the spread of diseases. There are two primary methods of hand disinfection: hand washing with soap and water, and the use of alcohol-based hand rubs.

Hand washing with soap and water is considered the most effective method for removing visible dirt and a broad spectrum of germs, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The mechanical action of rubbing hands together with soap and water helps to loosen and wash away these contaminants. Proper hand washing involves wetting hands, applying soap, lathering for at least 20 seconds, rinsing thoroughly, and drying with a clean towel or air dryer.

Alcohol-based hand rubs, often in gel or liquid form, are a convenient and effective alternative when soap and water are not readily available. These products typically contain a high concentration of alcohol (at least 60%) which denatures proteins essential for microbial survival. They work by killing most bacteria and viruses on the skin. However, they are less effective against certain types of germs, such as norovirus and C. difficile, and do not remove dirt or debris. Therefore, hand washing is preferred when hands are visibly soiled.
