Käyttökypäriä is a Finnish term used to describe protective helmets designed for specific uses. The concept emphasizes choosing head protection according to the risks and requirements of a task in order to maximize safety, comfort, and performance. In practice, käyttökypäriä covers a range of helmet types rather than a single model.

Common categories include industrial safety helmets used in construction and manufacturing, sports helmets for activities such as cycling or skiing, and climbing helmets for mountaineering. Military, police, and firefighting helmets form another segment with additional features such as ballistic protection, visors, or communication equipment. Some work contexts also employ specialized helmets for agricultural use or for hazardous environments.

Most käyttökypäriä share a hard outer shell and an energy-absorbing liner, typically made of polycarbonate, ABS, fiberglass, or composite materials, with an adjustable suspension system to fit the head. Protection and performance are regulated by standards that vary by use. In the European Union, many helmets carry CE markings and are tested under standards such as EN 397 for industrial helmets, EN 12492 for climbing, and EN 1078 for cycling.

Fit, care, and inspection are essential. A helmet must be properly sized, adjusted with the chin strap, and worn correctly. Regular checks for cracks, deformation, or wear of the foam liner are required, and helmets should be replaced after a significant impact or after the manufacturer’s recommended service life. Cleaning should use mild soap and water.
