Kätepuhastusgeel, also known as hand sanitizer gel, is a liquid, gel, or foam that is used to disinfect hands. It typically contains alcohol as its active ingredient, usually ethanol or isopropanol, at a concentration of at least 60%. The alcohol works by denaturing proteins in microorganisms, effectively killing them. Other ingredients may include emollients to prevent skin dryness, thickeners to achieve the desired consistency, and fragrances.

Hand sanitizer gels are a convenient alternative to soap and water when these are not readily available. They are effective at reducing the number of germs on the hands, especially in situations where handwashing facilities are limited. However, they are not a substitute for thorough handwashing with soap and water, which is more effective at removing dirt, grease, and certain types of pathogens, such as norovirus and Clostridium difficile.

The use of hand sanitizer is widespread, particularly in healthcare settings, schools, and public spaces. It is important to apply enough gel to cover all surfaces of the hands and rub them together until they are dry. While generally safe, some individuals may experience skin irritation or dryness from frequent use. Ingestion of hand sanitizer can be harmful, especially for children, due to its alcohol content.
