Käsidesinfektioaineita, often referred to as hand sanitizers, are liquids, gels, or foams intended to eliminate many viruses, bacteria, and fungi on the skin of the hands. They are primarily used when soap and water are not available for handwashing. The most common active ingredients in these products are either alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol) or quaternary ammonium compounds.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are highly effective against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. They work by denaturing proteins and disrupting cell membranes, leading to the rapid death of the microbes. For maximum effectiveness, hand sanitizers typically contain between 60% and 95% alcohol. It is crucial to rub the sanitizer over all surfaces of the hands until they are dry, which usually takes about 20 seconds, to ensure complete coverage and efficacy.

Non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers, which use ingredients like benzalkonium chloride or chloroxylenol, are also available. These are sometimes recommended for individuals who cannot use alcohol-based products due to allergies or skin sensitivities. However, their spectrum of antimicrobial activity may be narrower than that of alcohol-based sanitizers, and they may not be as rapidly effective against certain types of pathogens.

While hand sanitizers are a convenient and effective tool for reducing germ transmission, they are not a substitute for thorough handwashing with soap and water, especially when hands are visibly dirty or greasy, or after using the restroom. Regular handwashing is considered the most effective method for removing all types of germs and contaminants from the hands.
