Jäätmedirektiividel refers to the European Union's framework of directives concerning waste management. The foundational directive, Directive 2008/98/EC on waste, establishes the waste hierarchy as a guiding principle: prevention, preparing for re-use, recycling, other recovery (e.g., energy recovery), and disposal. This hierarchy prioritizes methods that are most environmentally beneficial. Member states are required to transpose these directives into their national legislation, setting specific targets for recycling and waste reduction.

Over time, various specific directives have been introduced to address particular waste streams, such as packaging waste, end-of-life vehicles, batteries and accumulators, and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). These targeted directives impose obligations on producers, importers, and consumers to ensure the collection, treatment, and recovery of these specific waste types. The directives also include provisions for permits, inspections, and penalties to ensure compliance. Amendments and updates to these directives reflect evolving environmental concerns and technological advancements in waste management.
