Jäämätijärjestelmät, commonly known as residue management systems, are crucial in modern agriculture for dealing with crop residues left after harvesting. These systems aim to efficiently manage the leftover plant material, such as stalks, leaves, and roots, to optimize subsequent farming operations and soil health.

The primary goals of residue management systems include preventing the buildup of excessive residue that can impede planting and cultivation, conserving soil moisture, reducing erosion, and facilitating nutrient cycling. Different agricultural practices and equipment are employed depending on the crop type, climate, and desired outcomes.

Common methods within residue management systems involve chopping, spreading, incorporating, or removing crop residues. Chopping and spreading, often done with a flail mower or specialized residue managers, break down larger pieces into smaller ones that decompose more readily and distribute them evenly across the field. Incorporation involves tilling the residues into the topsoil using plows, discs, or other tillage equipment, which can accelerate decomposition and nutrient release but may also disturb soil structure. In some cases, residues might be baled and removed for use as animal feed or other purposes, although this can lead to nutrient depletion if not managed carefully.

The choice of residue management system significantly impacts soil organic matter levels, weed control, and the incidence of certain crop diseases. No-till and reduced-till farming systems, in particular, rely heavily on effective residue management to maintain soil health benefits.
