The primary purpose of these structures is to prevent overheating, which can lead to performance degradation, component failure, and reduced lifespan of the device.

These structures are typically made from materials with high thermal conductivity, such as aluminum and copper. The design often involves maximizing the surface area exposed to the surrounding environment, which facilitates heat transfer through convection and radiation. Common designs include fins, pin arrays, and complex extruded profiles, each optimized for different airflow conditions and heat loads. The effectiveness of a heatsink structure is often measured by its thermal resistance, which indicates how well it can transfer heat away from the heat source.

In the context of electronics, heatsink structures are essential for components like CPUs, GPUs, power transistors, and LEDs. The heat generated by these components is conducted to the heatsink, which then dissipates it into the air or a liquid coolant. The efficiency of the heat transfer can be further enhanced by using thermal interface materials (TIMs) between the heat source and the heatsink, such as thermal paste or pads. In more demanding applications, active cooling methods, like fans or liquid cooling systems, are employed in conjunction with heatsink structures to achieve higher levels of heat removal.
