Jätteenpolttouuni, also known as a waste incinerator or waste-to-energy plant, is a facility designed to burn waste materials at high temperatures. The primary purpose of an incinerator is to reduce the volume of waste and, in many cases, to generate energy from the heat produced during combustion. This energy can be used to produce electricity or heat for district heating systems.

The process typically involves several stages. Waste is first collected and often sorted to remove recyclable materials or hazardous substances that could cause issues during incineration. The remaining waste is then fed into a combustion chamber where it is burned. The high temperatures, often exceeding 850 degrees Celsius, ensure that most organic matter is destroyed. The heat generated by this combustion is then captured, usually by a boiler system, to produce steam. This steam drives turbines connected to generators, producing electricity.

Modern waste incinerators are equipped with sophisticated emission control systems to minimize the release of harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. These systems can include filters to remove particulate matter, scrubbers to neutralize acidic gases, and catalytic converters to reduce nitrogen oxides. The ash produced from the incineration process is typically landfilled, though some materials can be recovered for use in construction or other applications.

Incineration is a significant component of waste management in many countries, offering an alternative to landfilling and contributing to energy generation. However, it also raises environmental concerns regarding emissions and the disposal of ash, leading to ongoing debate and technological advancements in the field.
