Järjestelmätiede, or Systems Science in English, is an interdisciplinary field that studies the nature of systems. It seeks to understand how systems, from simple mechanical ones to complex biological and social ones, are structured, how they function, and how they interact with their environments. This field aims to identify common principles and patterns that apply across diverse types of systems, regardless of their specific subject matter.

The core idea in systems science is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It emphasizes relationships, interactions, and feedback loops within a system, rather than focusing solely on individual components. Key concepts include emergence, where novel properties arise from the interaction of simpler elements, and self-organization, where systems spontaneously develop structure and order without external control.
