Järjekorramudelid

Järjekorramudelid, known in English as queueing models or queuing theory, are mathematical models used to analyze systems where entities arrive, wait for a service, and then depart. These models are fundamental in operations research and have wide-ranging applications in fields such as telecommunications, computer systems, traffic management, and customer service. The core components of a queueing system include arrivals, the queue itself, and the service facility.

Arrivals describe how customers or entities enter the system. This is often characterized by an arrival rate and a probability distribution for the time between arrivals, such as a Poisson process. The queue is the waiting line formed by entities that have arrived but are not yet being served. The capacity of the queue can be finite or infinite. The service facility consists of one or more servers that process the entities. The service time, or the time it takes for a server to complete a service, is also described by a probability distribution.

Several metrics are commonly used to evaluate the performance of queueing systems. These include average waiting time, average queue length, server utilization, and the probability of an entity having to wait. Different notation systems, such as Kendall's notation, are used to classify queueing models based on their arrival process, service process, number of servers, and queue capacity. For example, M/M/1 denotes a system with Poisson arrivals, exponential service times, and a single server.

The study of queueing models helps organizations optimize resource allocation, predict system performance under various load conditions, and improve customer satisfaction by minimizing waiting times. They provide a framework for understanding trade-offs between service quality and operational costs.
