Järgimisvahet, also known as sequential switching or relay switching, is a method used in telecommunications and electrical engineering to manage the connection of multiple circuits or devices through a series of switches. This technique is commonly employed in older telephone systems, particularly in manual switchboards, where operators manually connect calls between subscribers.

The process involves a series of steps where each switch in the sequence directs the call to the next until the final destination is reached. In a traditional manual telephone exchange, an operator would use a patch panel or similar device to physically connect the incoming call to the desired line by plugging and unplugging jacks. This method allowed for flexible routing but required human intervention, making it labor-intensive and prone to errors.

Järgimisvahet was particularly relevant in the early 20th century when telephone networks were expanding rapidly. It provided a way to handle calls without the need for pre-wired connections, allowing for dynamic routing based on real-time operator decisions. However, as automated switching systems, such as those using step-by-step or common-control switching, were developed, the reliance on manual sequential switching declined.
