The concept refers to slow transformations that unfold over extended timescales under ambient or mildly elevated temperatures and environmental conditions, and that are not fully captured by immediate post-treatment measurements.

The term is a neologism of Finnish origin, combining jälki (after, residual) with a root that evokes maturation or development. In the literature, jälkimäyttytyminen is discussed as a potential mechanism for property evolution that can influence long-term performance, reliability, and life-cycle predictions of materials ranging from polymers to alloys and protective coatings. Research generally frames it as a secondary, time-dependent process that can be diffusion-driven, crystallization-related, or driven by slow chemical changes such as oxidation or cross-linking.
