Jurisdiktio

Jurisdiktio is a term with roots in Latin, stemming from "ius" meaning law and "dicere" meaning to say. In its most fundamental sense, it refers to the authority or power of a court to hear and decide a case. This authority is not absolute and is typically defined by several factors.

One key aspect is territorial jurisdiction, which determines whether a court has the power to adjudicate disputes arising within a specific geographical area. Another is subject-matter jurisdiction, meaning the court must be authorized to hear the type of case presented, such as criminal matters, family law, or civil disputes over a certain monetary value. Personal jurisdiction, also known as in personam jurisdiction, concerns the court's power over the parties involved in the lawsuit. This is usually established if the defendant resides within the court's territory or has sufficient minimum contacts with it.

Jurisdiction is a critical threshold issue in any legal proceeding. A court lacking proper jurisdiction over a case cannot issue a valid judgment.
