Joghatóságfügg (legal standing or *legitimacy of standing*) refers to the principle in legal systems that determines whether a party has the right to initiate or participate in a legal proceeding. This concept ensures that only those with a sufficient stake in the outcome of a case can bring claims or defenses before a court. The determination of legal standing is crucial to prevent frivolous or irrelevant lawsuits and to maintain the efficiency and fairness of the judicial process.

In Hungarian legal practice, the concept aligns with broader European and international legal traditions, emphasizing that a plaintiff must demonstrate a personal and direct interest in the matter at hand. Without proper legal standing, a court may dismiss a case or refuse to hear arguments, even if the legal merits appear valid. This principle is particularly relevant in administrative, constitutional, and civil law proceedings, where the boundaries of who can challenge state actions or seek judicial review are carefully defined.

Legal standing is typically assessed based on three key elements: injury (a harm or wrong suffered), causation (a link between the injury and the defendant’s actions), and redressability (the likelihood that a judicial decision will remedy the injury).
