Jephtes

Jephtes is a figure mentioned in the Book of Judges in the Old Testament of the Bible. His story is found in Judges chapters 10 and 11. Jephtes was a Gileadite, the son of a prostitute, and his half-brothers cast him out of their home, preventing him from inheriting any land. He fled to the land of Tob, where he gathered a band of dissolute men around him.

Later, when the Israelites were oppressed by the Ammonites, the elders of Gilead, desperate for a leader, sought out Jephtes to lead their army. Despite his initial rejection and the circumstances of his birth, Jephtes agreed to lead them on the condition that if he was victorious, he would be their head. He then made a vow to the Lord. Jephtes promised that if God granted him victory over the Ammonites, he would offer as a burnt offering whatever first came out of the door of his house to meet him upon his return.

Jephtes achieved a significant victory over the Ammonites. Tragically, upon his return, his only daughter came out to meet him, dancing and playing timbrels. Jephtes, bound by his vow, lamented that he could not retract his words. His daughter accepted her fate, asking only for two months to go to the mountains with her companions to lament her virginity. After this, Jephtes carried out his vow, offering his daughter as a burnt offering. The story of Jephtes is often discussed in theological contexts concerning vows, sacrifice, and divine justice.
