Jarðolíur
Jarðolíur, also known as earth lights, are a natural phenomenon that occurs in the polar regions, specifically in the Arctic and Antarctic. They are caused by the interaction of solar particles with the Earth's magnetic field and the atmosphere. When these charged particles collide with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere, they transfer energy to the molecules, causing them to emit light. This light is typically green, but can also appear in other colors such as red, blue, and purple, depending on the type of gas molecule involved and the altitude at which the collision occurs.
Jarðolíur are most commonly observed in the night sky as curtains or arcs of light that dance
The study of jarðolíur, known as auroral science, has provided valuable insights into the Earth's magnetic field
